Investing in the next generation of healthcare providers for the Central Jersey Shore.

The People

Ocean Medical Center serving southern Monmouth and Ocean Counties is a not-for-profit full-service medical center dedicated to providing families with quality patient-centered care. A 344-bed hospital, the medical center has provided acute care for the local community for decades and has recently won accolades for several premier services, including cancer care, surgical services, cardiology, orthopedics, women’s services, stroke, radiology & diagnostic imaging, and more.

The Project

Ocean Medical Center has been paying careful attention to the trends of the physician shortage, both in New Jersey and nationwide and has explored new ways of attracting future physicians. In response to this crisis, Hackensack Meridian Health established Ocean Medical Center as the regional hub for resident training. The new Graduate Medical Education (GME), commonly referred to as residency and the final step in the education of physicians began in July of 2018 at Ocean Medical Center. We believe that supporting the residency program and helping to attract the next generation of health care providers to our community is important for not only enhancing care but growing the local economy. The Grunin Foundation has committed $1 million to the GME program.

The Impact

The GME program will provide comprehensive, first-rate training, combined with a very attractive region in which to establish a future and provide fertile ground for retention of these bright, competent future physicians. Throughout the program, residents are exposed to emergency medicine, geriatrics, pediatrics, surgical services, orthopedics, sports medicine, gynecology, maternal care, dermatology, behavioral health, and diagnostic/nuclear imaging. Each resident will have a panel of patients, where the resident will serve as the primary care physician.

The Commitment

Hackensack Meridian Health is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment that delivers culturally competent, patient-centered care. They strive to foster an inclusive environment, promote diversity at every level, employ and develop talent from all groups within the community and provide access to award-winning care for all.

The OMC GME program is focused on attracting, recruiting and amplifying a diverse group of residents and leaders for the community. Diversity in the physician workforce will positively impact healthcare access and patient outcomes.
